Misperception clouds the truth
Charlie Butts
Americans are massively overestimating the percentage of the population that is homosexual -- a phenomenon that a pro-family activist says plays right into an "information war against the truth."
A Gallup poll released last year revealed that the perception of the American public is that nearly 25 percent of the population is "gay" or lesbian. In a recent article published in The Atlantic magazine, political reporter Garance Franke-Ruta says of those poll results: "Such a misunderstanding of the basic demographics of sexual behavior and identity in America has potentially profound implications for the acceptance of the gay-rights agenda."
"On the one hand, people who overestimate the percent of gay Americans by a factor of 12 seem likely to also wildly overestimate the cultural impact of same-sex marriage," writes Franke-Ruta. "On the other hand, the extraordinary confusion over the percentage of gay people may reflect a triumph of the gay and lesbian movement's decades-long fight against invisibility and the closet.."
Peter LaBarbera of Americans for Truth About Homosexuality tells OneNewsNow the misperception is astounding because the actual figure -- even from many homosexual activist groups -- is more like 1.7 percent as homosexual and another 1.8 percent as bisexual.
"And so why are we giving such weight to this special-interest group?" he asks. "We need to fight back. We need to address the media propaganda that we see all the time -- media stories that are written, like press releases for homosexual activist groups and ubiquitous Hollywood propaganda."In addition, he maintains TV shows popularize what has come to be referred to as an "alternative" lifestyle.
"Americans need to fight back against this information war against the truth," LaBarbera declares. "We have a massive homosexual information war against truth, and the average American has been deceived by this information war, and so we have to get back to reality and help Americans understand that this is just a tiny sliver of society."
LaBarbera points out that homosexual activists once lied by claiming that 10 percent of the population was homosexual, and that was known to be untrue. He stresses that traditional groups must fight harder to educate the population about the truth.
