They're Democrats!

Remember those thieving politicians in Bell, California, who were robbing low-income citizens by giving themselves outrageously high salaries? Well, guess what? The American Pravda forgot to mention that they are all Democrats. What a surprise!

Obviously, there are corrupt politicians in all parties, but you can bet your last dollar that if these were conservatives, we wouldn't hear the end of it, as in 24/7 reporting.

Read from Weasel Zippers:

What Media Bias? Eight Politicians Arrested in Massive Corruption Scandal in California, Virtually All MSM News Outlets Omit One Crucial Fact…They’re All Democrats

"The old-school MSM can’t die quick enough. If they were Republicans their party affiliation would have made the headline…

(NB)- 'Today, eight city council members were arrested in Bell, California for what Los Angeles County District Attorney labeled “corruption on steroids.” Thus far, every major news outlet that has reported on the story has omitted the fact that all eight individuals arrested are Democrats.

These glaring omissions come only weeks after NewsBusters reported that of the 351 stories on the then-brewing controversy, 350 had omitted party affiliations, and one had mentioned they were Democrats only in apologizing for not doing so sooner.

ABC, CBS, the Los Angeles Times, the Associated Press, Bloomberg, USA Today, CNN, MSNBC, NPR, and the "San Francisco Chronicle all reported on the arrests today without mentioning party affiliations
.'

Good God, what whiners!

I had a hunch what the answer to this burning question was, but it took a little digging to find it. Everywhere you turn on a Google search, you've got another rightwingnut blogger whining about the fact that the news stories never mention that these eight people are Democrats.

Now, if you want, you can get paranoid about it, insisting it's only because they're Democrats that their party affiliation wasn't mentioned. But there's a far simpler, far more accurate explanation:

In lots of towns and cities in the West (including not only Bell, California, but also my hometown of Colorado Springs) municipal elections are, at least technically, non-partisan. In my town, everybody knows that the party affiliation of most of our Council is Republican, but that's only because of who the council members tend to endorse in statewide races for the Colorado House and Senate. When our council runs for election, there's no R or D next to their names.

And guess what? Bell,California is the same way, although most if not all of their officials are Democrats.

The LA Times offered an explanation, but none of the rabid rightwingnuts cared to hear the true, and innocuous, reasons:

"The question has been asked since The Times began reporting on the city of Bell salary scandal, which culminated in the arrests Tuesday morning of eight current and former leaders on corruption charges: Why doesn’t The Times report the political parties of these officials?

....

The answer is that these are nonpartisan positions. Those arrested Tuesday were the mayor, three council members, two former council members, the former city manager and the assistant city manager. The mayor and council members are elected in nonpartisan elections. And the city manager and assistant city manager are not even elected officials.

Council members Teresa Jacobo and Luis Artiga, who were arrested Tuesday, were up for election in 2009. The sample ballot from that election is on the Bell city clerk’s website. No political party is listed for any City Council candidate."

The truth sure is boring, isn't it, Ms. MoreLies? And sometimes you have to sift through all the rightwingnut BS to find it.
