I wonder how many cigarettes our nervous president has smoked tonight, as he waited for election results coming out of important gubernatorial races in both Virginia and New Jersey and a Congressional race in upstate New York.
The historically red state of Virginia turned blue in 2008 giving Obama a victory. He was the first Democrat to take Virginia in 44 years, a significant undertaking. But, that was last year, and things have changed dramatically in one year. Virginia is now a solidly red state once again, as Republican Bob McDonnell beat Democrat Creigh Deeds by a whopping 18 points. An all-out slaughter in Virginia!
If the Virgina results weren't bad enough for the Democrats, the news out of New Jersey is downright disastrous for the liberals. Republican Chris Christie squeaked out a victory over encumbent Jon Corzine. This is particularly newsworthy because New Jersey is a bluer than blue state. You can bet ACORN was out and about doing its dirty work on behalf of Corzine. Yet, despite all the corruption in New Jersey, the libs couldn't pull off a victory in this heavily Democratic state.
The New York results remain to be seen, though the Democrat Bill Owens has a lead over conservative Doug Hoffman; some say the results may not be known until about midnight.
All-in-all, a good night for conservatives. Sorry, Mr. President, things didn't work out so well for you this time.
UPDATE: I just heard on Fox News that the White House claims that Obama is not watching election results. Do they really expect us to be stupid enough to believe their nonsense?

Huzzah for a GOP resurgence!

C'mon, who the governors of Virginia and New Jersey are is not that important to the President... any President. Would Obama prefer, as a Democrat, that the Democratic candidates win? Sure. But I'd be very surprised if the President watched the TV coverage at all. That's stuff he has no control over, so why waste the time and energy? If it were Senate seats that might affect his ability to get legislation through COngress, it might be a slightly different matter, but the governors of VA and NJ can't really affect Obama's world much.
And I doubt Obama was paying much attention to NY-23, either, but the Republican party and you rightwingnuts had better pay attention to it. You all felt sooooo good about Sister Sarah, Fred Thompson, Newt Gingrich, Tim Pawlenty et al intruding into a local NY congressional race and forcing the "too liberal" GOP candidate out... and then the Conservative candidate lost to a Democrat.
If Obama didn't care all that much about who won the gubernatorial elections in NJ and VA, how do you account for his multiple visits, especially to NJ?
As usual, you are full of it. Obama cares deeply about these election results because they are a reflection of how Americans view the liberal policies in this country.
Yes, Americans still like Obama, but they despise his policies. It's only a matter of time until they come to their senses and tie the two together.
Obama and his people tried to convince Corzine to not even run for re-election, because they weren't thrilled with him. Would they rather have had Corzine win than the Rpeublican? Of course. But to think that Obama "cared deeply" about this is to display an appalling lack of understanding of the political process. Explain WHY Obama would care, exactly. YOU say it's because it's a repudiation of liberal policies; I say it's a repudiation of incumbents.
And it's QUITE telling that you refuse to even look at NY-23, even though it's where Sister Sarah stuck her big nose into a local election and had it hacked right off her face. Now THAT was a repudiation.. as in "Sarah, get your ass out of our NY election and go somewhere where people might be interested in your opinion."
Oh, wait... there IS no such place, except in Rightwingnut La-La Land. And there are no elections there, only coronations and canonizations.
the states, and there are 50 of them, are fully capable of governing themselves. obama need not worry or waste time pondering what is going on with NJ and VA. because the presidents job is not to over govern its citizens. its to ensure we are protected from a foreign rule. i believe in my state, NJ, we're capable of running ourselves fine. we don't need bailout money and we don't need assistance in any more programs. our taxes are high enough, and its bringing us all down.
You're mistaken if you think NJ can take of itself, financially at least. The state draws down far more tax dollar from the federal government than it takes in, and has for decades.
