Obama Celebrates Ramadan

Read about the celebration of the Islamic holiday Ramadan, via the American Thinker:

The Ramadan dinner at the White House

"President Barack Obama (D) worked very hard on his official vacation on Martha's Vineyard, reappointing Ben Bernanke as Federal Reserve Chairman and speaking at the late Senator Edward Kennedy's (D-MA) funeral.

So now he's off to Camp David for an extended Labor Day week end break. OK, he deserves it. But in between his vacations he managed to sandwich in hosting a White House dinner for the Muslim month of Ramadan, when Muslims believe Muhammad received the Koran. There is a long tradition of presidential dinners acknowledging important holidays or anniversaries of the various religions and ethnicities in this country.

Speaking to the Muslims, government leaders and other invited guests at the dinner, Obama celebrated ,'how much Muslims have enriched America and its culture -- in ways both large and small.'

Some excerpts.

'One of those values is the freedom to practice your religion -- a right that is enshrined in the 1st Amendment of the Constitution. Nashala Hearn, who joins us from Muskogee, Okla., took a stand for that right at an early age. When her school district told her that she couldn't wear the hijab, she protested that it was a part of her religion.

The Department of Justice stood behind her, and she won her right to practice her faith. She even traveled to Washington to testify before Congress. Her words spoke to a tolerance that is far greater than mistrust -- when she first wore her headscarf to school, she said, "I received compliments from the other kids."'

Good for the Department of Justice. However--and understandably--Obama did not mention the case of Rifqa Bary, the American teen ager born to Muslim immigrant parents who fled her home, fearing her parents would kill her after her conversion to Christianity.

'In 150 generations in family, no one has known Jesus. I am the first -- imagine the honor in killing me? There is great honor in that, because if they love Allah more than me, they have to do it. It's in the Koran. I'm fighting for my life. You guys don't understand. ... I want to worship Jesus freely, that's what I want. I don't want to die."'

Yes, it is understandable that parents would be deeply pained when their beloved child rejects a deeply held philosophy, a way of life they cherish and adopts another. But to kill her for that? But honor killings are a part of the culture of Muslim countries, apparently a tradition some have imported here.

And as for freedom to practice your religion--just try being a Christian or a Bahai or a Jew or a Hindu in Saudi Arabia. Other Muslim countries allow limited religious freedom to others--as long as the practioners realize they are dhimmis, scorned, second class citizens subject to onerous restrictions.

In America, Muslims have carried out numerous attacks against Jews and their institutions.

'Together, we have a responsibility to foster engagement grounded in mutual interest and mutual respect. And that's one of my fundamental commitments as president, both at home and abroad. That is central to the new beginning that I've sought between the United States and Muslims around the world. And that is a commitment that we can renew once again during this holy season.'

Yes, we most certainly do 'have a responsibility to foster engagement grounded in mutual interest and mutual respect.' The key word though, is mutual. So far it has been one sided--the other side hasn't reciprocated much but rejected much. Perhaps Muslims can renew this mutual interest and respect 'during this holy season' for them.

'So tonight, we celebrate a great religion and its commitment to justice and progress.'

But to Muslims, happy Ramadan. And enjoy your American freedoms."

A few comments are in store regarding this celebration at the White House. Granted, there are many, many peaceful Muslims who just want to practice their faith and more power to them. But, time after time, our presidents, Bush included, go on and on about what a peaceful, tolerant religion Islam is, and that just simply is not the case. If it were, dear Rifqa Bary would not be fleeing in fear for her life from the threat of her devout Muslim parents.

As to Muslims "enriching our culture", puhleese! What, is he referring to their contribution to the once ordinary September 11th? Then, there is the contribution of foot baths, along with every other demand they make upon society, even though they represent less than 1% of our population. Sorry, President Obama, you were wrong when you stated that we had "one of the largest Muslim populations in the world". Perhaps, in your dreams, but not in reality.

This coming from the president who refused to participate in the National Day of Prayer. I guess he didn't want to confuse his Muslim brothers. Hmmm, I wonder if President Barack Hussein Obama had anything to eat before sundown?

What a joke of a hypocrite you are. Claiming you're not a religious bigot full of hatred for the Islamic religion, and then blasting the entire religion every chance you get.

Obama celebrated a seder back in April, the first seder ever celebrated in the White House ever. And you slammed him for being insincere. And now, when he celebrates a Ramadan dinner in the WHite House (probably also a first) you imply it's evidence that Obama is a closet Muslim. And you clobber Obama for not insulting Islam at the Ramadan celebration.

Let me know the next time somebody is invited into your "church" and then proceeds to lambast you hypocritical Religious Rightwingnuts. You're being polite in extending the invitation; only a jerk would be as ingracious as you evidently expect Obama to be.

Grow up. And read your New Testament some. The God in my Bible would never condone your hateful bigotry.

Oh, Diogenes, I never claimed I did not hate Islam. I despise it to its core, and I hate the demands that Muslims place on us in the U.S. I said I did not hate Muslims because most of them are deceived by a false religion.

I am one of the few people who is willing to stand up for the abominable way women are treated in Islam and against honor killings. You and your likes just bury your heads in the sand and pretend none of this is happening, making excuse after excuse for their actions. I guess that makes me more of a friend to Muslim women than you.

As to Jesus' teachings, he frequently called out hypocrites when he saw them.

Obama is kissing up to the Islamists and throwing Christians under his bus. I just want equal treatment on his part.

Oh, I see. So all your earlier comments about "I'm not against Islam, I'm against RADICAL Islam" were a load of crap!

Thanks for the clarification.

I am guessing that honor killings should be protected by our freedom to practice religion. That will be the next shoe to drop, after the ground zero victory mosque is built.

This great country was founded on Judeo Christian principles. We should have NEVER, EVER let anyone of the Islamic faith into this the US because they seek our destruction. If you are of that faith, you are radical since the Koran calls for infidels (Christians, Jews) to be killed. Obama is of the Islamic faith and he said he would side with the Muslims in Dreams. Islam allows for lying as a means to achieve their holy (i.e., crazy) objectives.

Serial liar. Claims to be a Christian. Used that lie to eek out more votes in 2008, or at least subdue Christian opposition.

Nothing he's done reflects Christianity, but a lot he's done and said reflects Islam.

Why is Congress afraid to call Obama on his lies? Because many of them are part of the lie, on both sides of the aisle.
