Nice sentiments, but totaly inaccurate, historically speaking.
First off, all but one of the references made by the congressman refer to "God" which doesn't prove anything about America being a Judeo-Christian nation. At best, it says that our Founding Fathers believed in God.
Thomas Jefferson is a horrible example for this congressman to cite, because he was anything but an ordinary Christian. Jefferson was a deist, but he didn't believe in the divinity of Jesus and he thought that the miraculous stories of the Bible were fiction and actually harmful to man's psyche.
And, instead of listening to a modern-day congressman tell us what he THINKS the feeling of the Founding Fathers was, how about exploring the facts a bit?
The Treaty of Tripoli (one of a series of treaties that dealt with the Barbary Coast pirates) was drafted in 1796 during the term of President John Adams (a devout Christian) and UNANIMOUSLY ratified by the Senate in 1797... only 8 years after the Constitution and Bill of Rights were enacted.
And what did the treaty say?
"As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion; as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquility, of Mussulmen; and, as the said States never entered into any war, or act of hostility against any Mahometan nation, it is declared by the parties, that no pretext arising from religious opinions, shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries."
Oooooops.
The Founding Fathers unanimouosly approved language that said, unequivocally, that AMERICA WAS NOT FOUNDED ON CHRISTIANITY. (And forget about Judaism: most states didn't allow Jews to hold office, or even vote!)
See, here's where your logic falls apart. Yes, the vast majority of the Founding Fathers were Christians. But that doesn't mean that they based our nation's poitical system ON Christianity. Here's an analogy: all of the Founding Fathers were white males, and many of them owned slaves. And few of those that didn't own slaves believed in racial equality when it came to African-Americans. Would it be accurate to say that America was "founded" on sexism and racism/white supremicism? No.
Take a step back and examine why it's so important for you to prove that America was founded on Judeo-Christian principles. There's only one reason that I can see: it gives you a sense of moral superiority to know that "your" religion is what America was based on, and that "your" religion has a greater stake and a greater claim on what happens in America today.
Just remember, Diogenes, as you blast every defense of Christianity and its influence in the founding of our nation, what the Bible says:
"I tell you, whoever acknowledges me before men, the Son of Man will also acknowledge him before the angels of God. But he who disowns me before men will be disowned before the angels of God. (Luke 12:8-9)
In case you didn't notice, this comes from the New Testament, since you like to blast references from the Old Testament. And God sees every offensive comment you make.
As usual, you've overstated the issue. I didn't say that Christianity had no INFLUENCE on the founding of our nation, as you claim I did. Christianity DID have an influence. But it overstates the case to say that our nation was "founded" on Christianity.
How exactly is it "disowning" God by stating the fact that this nation was not founded on Christianity, nor is it today, in our multicultural times, truly a Christian nation.
You just cannot grasp the deparation between religion/culture and government, can you? We are not a theocracy -- never have been and, God willing, never will be.
Render unto Caesar.....
P.S. Go ahead and ask your version of God to call down fire and brimstone upon me. If I thought your concept of God was anywhere NEAR the truth, I'd be concerned... but it's not, and I'm not!
You're wrong, Diogenes. The separation of church and state was included because our Founding Fathers wanted a nation without a government-controlled church, as was the case in England with the Anglican church. As the Tennessee coach I wrote about stated: "We are given the Freedom OF Religion, not the Freedom FROM Religion."
It is interesting that as a Christian, you ALWAYS side against those defending Christ.
And no, I'm not calling down fire and brimstone upon you. I'm just trying to show you how deceived you are. You should be a Christian first, then a loyal liberal. But, you've got it backwards.
Jesus doesn't need your defending, that's for sure. And you're not defending Christ, as you claim you are. You're twisting His words into a defense of your politics.
When your ideas are weak, you always try to wrap yourself in our flag or our Lord. And that's perverse.
The Lord has placed a strong burden on my heart for the nation of Israel and the Jewish people. The anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism throughout the world is growing rampantly, and the public is not being told the truth about Israel.
At the same time, Islam is an enormous threat to the West, and because of political correctness, most will not address its dangers. In all honesty, the Hard Left and Islam have united and are using one another because they both share the same hatred for America, Israel, and Christianity. As Christians, we must hate Islam, but not have hate in our hearts for Muslims. They are totally deceived by an evil religion which has them bound by its lies, hatred, and intolerance. We must also remember that most Muslims were born into their evil religion and know nothing else. Jesus has love in His heart for the Muslim people, so He expects the same from us.

Here's the beauty of America:
We are all free to believe in whatever God you want.... or no God at all.
But NONE OF US may use the power and influence of the civil government to force our personal beliefs on anybody else.
That doesn't mean that what we believe in is worth anything less. It just means we all play on a level playing field.
