Army Recruiter Killed in Arkansas, A Second Wounded

The mainstream media is all abuzz with the murder of late-term abortionist George Tiller. But, approximately 24 hours after his murder, an Army recruiter was shot and killed in Arkansas, and a second one wounded. Wasn’t that a tragedy and outrage, as well? Somehow, I don’t think the recruiter killing will get the same press coverage or attention from the president as the story about Tiller.

Read from Michelle Malkin:

And now this: Shooting at military recruiting center; 1 dead, 1 wounded

“A shooting at an Arkansas Army recruiting center has left one recruiter dead and one wounded. Pray for the families, please:

One Army recruiter was killed Monday and a second was wounded in a shooting at a recruiting office, and a suspect was arrested, police said.

Police Lt. Terry Hastings said the recruiter was shot when a man in a black SUV opened fire on the office in west Little Rock at about 10:30 a.m.

The vehicle was stopped on Interstate 630 a short time later and a suspect was taken into custody. Hastings said the suspect pulled over and surrendered without incident.

Police said they found an assault rifle in the vehicle.

Hastings said he did not know whether the recruiting office was specifically targeted or was randomly chosen.’

I wonder if the Justice Department will send marshals to beef up protection at recruiting centers — especially given the past targeting of military centers on campuses and elsewhere across the country.

Too early to say anything about suspect, motives, etc. But these facts are worth bearing in mind:

Flashback: Special report: Tracing the Left’s escalating war on military recruiters

Flashback: The continuing war on recruiters that the Left doesn’t want to talk about

Flashback: Document drop: Unclassified memo warns military personnel of anti-war threats to recruiters, Army installations/facilities

Flashback: Vandals strike at Berkeley Marine recruiting center again

Flashback: Explosion at Times Square recruiting station; Update: Bloomberg blasts the blast; Update: Security video released; Update: House Dems received letters, photo of recruitment center; Fox reports maybe more than 8 received letters; AP says manifesto was anti-Iraq war screed, “Happy New Year, We did it;” Newsday: At least 10 got the package

***
President Obama issued a statement yesterday after Tiller’s murder: ‘However profound our differences as Americans over difficult issues such as abortion, they cannot be resolved by heinous acts of violence.’

I hope he will be just as vociferous in condemning heinous acts of violence against our military recruiters
.”

Don’t hold your breath, Michelle.

Oh, you'll have a field day with this one!

The man arrested in this shooting is one Abdulhakim Mujahid Muhammad, a 24 yr old recent convert to Islam, and initial reports say the killer had "political and religious motives". He's been charged with first degree murder and 15 counts of engaging in a terrorist act (shooting at a occupied building).

And if I had even ONCE suggested that military recruiters are murderers, I'd probably feel some small measure of complicity.

But I'm glad the Religious Right think they've found their bright shiny object to divert everybody's attention away from Kansas.

Actually, my intention was not to divert attention away from the Tiller killing, just to show that the killing of the Army recruiter will not be considered worthy of much press coverage, when, it fact, it should be just as important as the news about Tiller.

It seems to me that you are awfully defensive about Tiller. Do you really see him as some kind of hero?

Diogenes, why are you ALWAYS so full of rage about everything? Your side won. You should be on cloud nine.

I've heard that liberals are never happy. You are making that point.

Nobody's side "won" when it comes to murder.

As for Tiller being a hero of any kind, no, I don't think so. Honestly, I had never even heard of Tiller until I read the sliming he received on this blog.

I think the rightwing evangelical movement, teaming with the Karl Rovian tactics of the Bush and Cheney-led Republican Party, has done a huge disservice to the vast majority of Americans. Simply winning the 2008 presidential election hasn't undone the harm those guys inflicted for eight years. And allowing rightwingnut bloggers to promote, unchallenged, sainthood for Bush/Cheney/Rove won't help undo their mischief.

As for religion, I see no good coming out of any attempt to demonize all things Muslim. A religious war -- especially a religious war with so many extremists on both sides -- cannot serve humanity well.

Debra: first thing I thought of when I found to the story, I wonder if Huffpo is running with this story to condemn themselves?

Since the left and Hollywood indorses and promotes violence against our military and specifically recruiters, the left is obviously to blame!

Actually, HuffPo did cover the recruiter's murder. That's just another indication that the two situations are not equivalent. HuffPo covered it right away (that's the first thing that popped up when I Googled it) whereas Operation Rescue pulled down their website, rather than have too many people see the postings that Scott Roeder had made on its site.

We shouldn't get into a pissing contest over which murder meant more. Both were tragedies. And conservatives weren't any more responsible for Tiller's murder than liberals were responsible for the murder of the Army recruiter.

But the extremists who labelled Tiller as The Baby Killer, and those that compare military recruiters to baby killers DO bear some small measure of responsibility for the killings. No, they didn't pull the triggers... but they did create a climate that spawned the murderers.
